The Best Shows I’ve Watched This Year (So Far)

We’re only 23 days in, but it’s been a frigid year so far in my neck of the woods. With that being said, I’ve been doing my fair share of binge watching. Here’s some of the greatest I’ve discovered during my adventures.

True Story (Netflix)

This technically came out at the end of 2021, but I didn’t get to it until this year (sue me.) Honestly, I didn’t jump on it right away because I lacked faith in Kevin Hart, BUT I was so thrilled by how much he proved me wrong. I will say it’s a little odd watching his character since he’s basically playing himself; after seeing the show, I feel like Kevin may have some SECRETS. Regardless, it kept me on my toes the whole time and there’s no way I could’ve predicted most of the twists it took. Now, I want to see Kevin Hart in another serious role where it isn’t so close to his actual life.

Queer Eye (Netflix)

Again, I KNOW this show isn’t new, but I hopped on the train late and I am living for the ride! Queer Eye is one of the most wholesome and positive shows I’ve ever seen. I have so much love for the Fab 5; they’re each special in their own way. Even though I’ve cried through multiple episodes, it’s alway worth it. It’s a proven fact that it’s impossible to be in a bad mood while watching it.

How I Met Your Father (Hulu)

As much as I LOVE Hilary Duff, I was skeptical at first because I was also such a big fan of How I Met Your Mother. After only 2 episodes in, (that’s all that has been released thus far) consider me hooked. They’ve kept some elements of the original show (for example, the theme song and Marshall/Lily/Ted’s old apartment,) but have also added some of their own flair. Instead of watching the kids hear their father tell the story (Rest In Peace Bob Saget,) you get to watch the mother herself (who’s played by the iconic Kim Cattrall by the way) tell the story while video chatting her son off camera. I also like that they added friends with different personalities than the original to really mix it up. Some of the humor in it is super subtle and had me CACKLING. I’m now looking forward to Tuesdays for more episodes!

The Golden Palace (Hulu)

I am SUCH a big Golden Girls fan, but I never actually watched the spinoff until this year! God bless Hulu for adding it after Betty White, my queen, passed away. Before, it was truly impossible to find and it didn’t have the best reputation. Even though it only made it 24 episodes, it was so cool to see the girls together again (minus Dorothy) up to their same antics. I don’t care what anyone says, they rock owning that hotel. Also, a young Don Cheadle AND Cheech had amazing chemistry with the gals! If you’re too a Golden Girls stan, I promise this will make your heart so warm.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Hulu)

The gang never disappoints me and season 15 of It’s Always Sunny is hysterical. I don’t know how they continue to evolve so well, but I hope they never stop. They do such a great job staying relevant and this season is no different. They way they explain things make so much sense even when it doesn’t at all. Multiple episodes had me in tears laughing, per usual.

Yellowjackets (Showtime)

I had to save the best for last! I could go on and on about Yellowjackets, but I would be doing you a disservice if I spoiled it even a little bit. Without giving anything away, it’s so cleverly done and well thought out that the twists are all mind blowing. Every single person in the cast is so perfect that it feels like it can’t be fake. Not to be dramatic, but it’s easily one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time; maybe even THE best 1st season of a show I’ve ever seen. It hurts me physically that I have to wait a whole year for a second season. If you were to only watch one show this year, Yellowjackets should be it. Let’s just say there’s a reason it has a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
